Sacconi String Quartet & Simon Callaghan (piano) – Monday 5 May

Sacconi String Quartet
Ben Hancox & Hannah Dawson violins
Robin Ashwell viola | Cara Berridge cello

Simon Callaghan piano

Ravel   String Quartet in F major
Bliss   Piano Quartet, Op. 18
Franck   Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 14

The Sacconi Quartet are fast becoming Festival favourites and, considering they have been captivating audiences with their unanimous and compelling ensemble for over two decades now, it is easy to see why. They come this year with Simon Callaghan, whose impeccable playing we last enjoyed with the Greenwich Piano Trio in the 2023 Festival.

For our final concert, this is a true Festival programme in every way: arriving at the culmination of our celebrations of Maurice Ravel and Arthur Bliss, and finishing with one of the greatest Piano Quintets of all time.

Join us after the concert for a celebratory glass of wine!

Sacconi Quartet and Ben Goldscheider (horn) – Monday 1 May

The Sacconi Quartet returns for its third concert in Leamington for three years and Ben Goldscheider plays here for the first time. Since being a Concerto finalist in the 2016 BBC Young Musician competition, his national and international rise has been meteoric. Chosen by the Barbican for the ECHO Rising Stars, he has performed at the most prestigious venues on the continent and he made his BBC Proms debut last year with the CBSO.

The Festival draws to a climax with two works by Robin Holloway, the beautiful Romance from Rachmaninov’s only completed string quartet, some delightful Mozart and one of Schubert’s greatest chamber works.

Join us in the Conservatory after the concert for a celebratory glass of wine!

CANCELLED – Tom Poster piano, Sacconi String Quartet and Andrew Marshall double bass

TOM POSTER piano
SACCONI STRING QUARTET
Ben Hancox and Hannah Dawson violins
Robin Ashwell viola, Cara Berridge cello
ANDREW MARSHALL double bass

Beethoven    Piano Sonata in E minor Op 90
Beethoven    String Quartet in B flat Op 18 No 6
Beethoven arr. Lachner    Piano Concerto No 5 in E flat Op 73 ‘Emperor’

The opening concert of the 2020 Leamington Music Festival sets the scene beautifully for our celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, bringing together the composer’s piano, chamber and orchestral works, although perhaps in a way you have never heard before. The piano sonata with which we begin the Festival was written in 1814 – the year the Royal Pump Rooms was built.

Tom Poster’s superb performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet with the Aronowitz Ensemble in last year’s Festival proved that he is a piano force to be reckoned with. He is joined by the Sacconi Quartet, which embarks on its 20th-anniversary tour next year, and double bassist Andrew Marshall for the Emperor Concerto which should certainly begin the weekend with a bang!
